LINCOLN LEGACY LEARNING KITS

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) brings the lessons of Lincoln to the children of Illinois through this exciting new educational outreach program. Lincoln's Legacy Learning Kits, targeted to grades 5-8, are four contained units of study on the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln.

Explore Lincoln's accomplishments and the contributions of his thoughts, ideals and actions, in a way that will enlighten and inspire your students.

Each kit contains:

  • "Lincoln's Legacy Lesson Plans and Teacher Resource Guide" CD with lesson plans and activities AND digitized primary source material and worksheets you can print off for use in your classroom;
  • Laminated reproduction primary documents, many in Lincoln's own hand, from our library collections;
  • Laminated historic images, which visually bring history to life for your students;
  • Exciting and interesting reproduction artifacts for hands-on history;
  • Music from the time period including Civil War bands, ballads and patriotic songs;
  • Age-appropriate books (including multiple copies in the Lincoln Biography Reading Kit for small group discussions);
  • And so much more!
Why teach with Lincoln's Legacy Learning Kits?
The Lincoln's Legacy Learning Kits address Illinois' State Learning Standards. In addition, they meet teachers' needs for integrated curriculum by combining social studies topics with Language Arts, Reading, Writing, Fine Arts and even, Mathematics, Geography, and Science. Moreover, these kits and their contents provide experiential learning using concrete objects or situations—a method the National Council for the Social Studies advocates as "the single most effective vehicle for helping young adolescents make meaning out of their world."

The kits can be checked out FREE OF CHARGE from any public library in Illinois through the state-wide inter-library loan system. Join us in commemorating Lincoln's 200th birthday in 2009. Visit your local Illinois library to check out the kits for your classroom today.
