PACKAGING PRESIDENTS
February 5, 2008 (Super Tuesday) — November 9, 2008
Two Centuries of Campaigns and Candidates the quadrennial political rite of the American presidential campaign has undergone profound change over the past two centuries. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and many of their successors would hardly recognize an electoral process that today involves endless polling, dawn to dusk campaign stops, non-stop advertising, and the expenditure of tens of millions of dollars. Packaging Presidents will explore this changing phenomenon via an exhibition, which will open on Super Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, and an accompanying publication. The exhibition will highlight items lent by Merrill Berman, one of the nation's pre-eminent private collectors of presidential campaign memorabilia, as well as materials from the ALPLM's own holdings.

In 1908... A Sculptural Archive by Brian Gillis
August 16, 2008
In conjunction with "Something So Horrible: The Springfield Race Riot of 1908". In 1908...is intended to operate much as a memory might in telling the story of the 1908 Springfield Race Riot and essentially coaxes the audience into becoming witnesses. Primary sources will be represented in the form of period maps, arrest records, court proceedings, death records, National Guard documentation, and oral histories given by people who were around the Springfield area during the 1908 riot. In 1908... will provide an environment where the viewer is presented with unadulterated primary information that uses varied communicative styles (audio, literal, and visual) and linear components but exist as such that has multiple entree points and places to go. The directions are determined by the viewer's experience, and the thesis of the story is unmistakable even when void of an omniscient storyteller.
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library - 2nd floor
Open daily 9-5 pm
