Eli's Cheesecake to produce official cakes for Abraham
Lincoln's 200th birthday parties
Springfield, IL — A 200th birthday is a special occasion that calls for a special birthday cake. Eli's Cheesecake of Chicago has risen to the occasion by creating all of the special cakes to be served at the two major Lincoln Bicentennial birthday parties on February 12, 2009 in Springfield, Illinois.
"Eli's Cheesecake, Chicago's favorite dessert and one of Illinois' most famous foods, is delighted to represent the State of Illinois by participating in the bicentennial celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday. We also paid tribute to both Abraham Lincoln's love of apples and the strong Lincoln references present throughout Barack Obama's campaign, transition and Inaugural festivities by creating a 500 pound apple cheesecake for the Commander in Chief Inaugural Ball, bringing a taste of the Obamas' hometown to Washington, DC," said Eli's President Marc Schulman.
Eli's Cheesecake will make a 42 inch round apple cinnamon cheesecake for the 1860 Period Ball at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, a tribute to Lincoln's love of apples, topped with an exact edible replica of Lincoln's Springfield home, the only home he ever owned. Eli's Master Pastry Chef Laurel Boger consulted actual architectural drawings and photos from all angles to create the two-story t-shaped colonial with green shutters, made of gingerbread, fondant, chocolate and royal icing. The cake will serve more than 400 guests, and will be on display in the Lincoln Presidential Museum's beautiful plaza. The Period Ball begins at 6 p.m. and the cake cutting takes place at 6:30 p.m. There are no tickets remaining for the Period Ball.
The Abraham Lincoln Association's Lincoln Bicentennial Birthday Party will also feature Eli's creations. Eli's will make individual three-inch white chocolate raspberry cheesecakes enrobed in bittersweet chocolate ganache and topped with a three-inch replica of an authentic 1909 Lincoln penny made of chocolate dusted with copper colored luster dust. In addition, Eli's will create a three-tiered white chocolate raspberry cheesecake decorated with an edible stovepipe hat and chocolate Lincoln pennies dusted with copper colored luster dust. The Birthday Party starts at 7 p.m. at Springfield's Crowne Plaza Hotel. The main ballroom is sold out, but overflow seating is available at $45 by calling (866) 865-8500.
Eli's is no newcomer to gala presentations, having baked giant celebratory cheesecakes for the Commander in Chief Ball at the Inaugural of Barack Obama, at both Inaugurals of Bill Clinton, the City of Chicago's 150th Birthday, Taste of Chicago's 25th Anniversary, the Chicago Bulls' Championship, and the White Sox World Series victory, to name a few.
Eli's Cheesecake, created by the late restaurateur Eli Schulman as the signature dessert at Eli's the Place for Steak, a Chicago legend for 39 years, has grown into one of the largest specialty cheesecake bakeries in the country servicing restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and a mail order division. It has been named a "Chicago food icon" by the Chicago Tribune and called "perfection on a plate" by the "O" list in Oprah Magazine. In October 1996, Eli's opened Eli's Cheesecake World, the 62,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art bakery offering a business center with daily tours, a retail store, dessert café and corporate headquarters.
