Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Celebrates Lincoln's Birthday

Festivities to include seminars, music and more

SPRINGFIELD, IL: One-hundred and ninety-seven years ago, Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. Today, his birth is observed across the country and, for the first time, at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Below is a list of events scheduled for Lincoln's birthday weekend celebration.

Saturday, February 11

All Day Prof. Phineas Fairhead, Practical Phrenologist

9:30am Abraham Lincoln's Springfield - Historian Dr. Bryon Andreasen addresses subjects such as: Where did Lincoln buy the wedding ring he gave to Mary Todd? What kinds of leisure activities did the Lincolns partake? He will also discuss Lincoln-themed Springfield walking tours. First Floor Classroom (Library)
9:30am - 10:00am Civil War-era Songs by Randy Erwin

10:00am - Noon Book Sale and Signing, with Betty Carlson Kay, author of What Did Lincoln Do in 1832?

10:30 a.m. Ceremonial Flag Raising - The ALPLM is honored to fly a US flag that flew over an Army camp near Baiji, Tikrit in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The flag was presented to the State of Illinois, in recognition of the state's first-rate treatment of veterans, by Army Specialist James Wagner, who returned from Iraq in July. The American flag flew over Spc. Wagner's Army camp. Spc. Wagner feels a special connection to Abraham Lincoln as he shares the sixteenth president's birthday, February 12. The brief ceremony will be performed by local Boy Scout Troop 202 of Springfield. Public welcome.

11:00am Major Findings from the Lincoln Legal Papers - A project team member discusses the findings of fifteen years of research and investigation, including the final phase of the project, a four volume selection of cases representative of Abraham Lincoln's legal practice, which will be published by the University of Virginia Press in 2007. 1:00pm - 2:30pm Meet sculptor John McClarey, creator of "A Greater Task" - the spectacular new piece that will soon grace Union Square Park across the street from the presidential museum. The Museum Store offers a spectacular moquettes of this exquisite piece, along with a new life-size bust of Lincoln.

1:30pm The Archeology of New Salem - Archeologist Robert Mazrim discusses the earliest locations of structures that predate those reconstructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, including his efforts to excavate the last unexplored part of the village where Abraham Lincoln owned property.
