Presidential Library announces 2009 Saturday Afternoon Teas

Springfield, IL — The ever-popular Saturday Afternoon Teas return to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library during 2009, with the first, Tea with Harriet Tubman, scheduled for Saturday, March 21. The Teas are sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation.

All of the teas will be held in the all-glass Lincoln Reception Room at the Presidential Library, and all start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $35 each, which includes tea, savories and cakes, and may be purchased at www.presidentlincoln.org or by calling (217) 558-8934.

Tea with Harriet Tubman (portrayed by Kathryn Harris) will be held Saturday, March 21. Hear from Tubman herself, the famous conductor on the Underground Railroad. Born a slave, she made her own escape to freedom in 1849 with the help of abolitionists. She then turned to help her family and others. Harriet was never captured despite a reward and slave catchers on her trail. She'll tell you whether all of her "passengers" successfully made their journey, and about her service during the Civil War as a scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army.

My Grandmother's Apron with the Tea Ladies is scheduled for Saturday, May 16. Bring your own vintage apron with a story behind it, as the Tea Ladies share what women historically have done while wearing their aprons, including gardening, cooking, sewing, laundry, and more.

Victorian Christmas Memories with the Tea Ladies will b e held Saturday, November 21. Learn how the Victorians prepared for Christmas, including their take on handmade ornaments, Christmas cards, Santa Claus, handmade and purchased gifts, and famous candy treats such as the "Peppermint Pig."
